The School of Pharmacy is ranked 5th in the World in the 2021 QS World Rankings for Pharmacy and Pharmacology.  We now have an exciting Technician role available, which we are seeking to fill with an enthusiastic, proactive person who will deliver timely and high-quality technical support.

What the role involves:

The role holder will provide high quality technical support to the School of Pharmacy’s undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes. You will work closely with academic staff and the Teaching Technical Manager to prepare practical classes and oversee the day-to-day running of the teaching laboratories, ensuring that resources are maintained and available when required as well as providing technical supervision/training in the use of equipment and specialist techniques.

What we need from you:

  • 2 A-levels in science or science related subjects, plus some relevant work experience in a similar technical or scientific role OR
  • 2 A-level equivalent vocational qualifications (NVQ, City and Guild, etc.), plus some relevant work experience in a similar technical or scientific role OR
  • Significant experience in a similar technical or scientific role in lieu of formal academic qualifications

Technician (based in Pharmacy School Building, University Park)

The post holder will work as part of a team providing teaching support for staff and students in the building, having particular responsibilities for Chemistry focussed practical classes. 

Duties will include:

Provision of laboratory practical classes

  • Preparation of chemicals and equipment for delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Training in generic chemical techniques (i.e., use of rotary evaporators, UV/Vis Spectroscopy & HPLC)

Health and Safety monitoring within the laboratory environment

  • Ensure all lab users comply with local safety arrangements and relevant health and safety regulations
  • Monthly monitoring of the labs 
  • Classes/activities have a current Risk Assessment and Standard Operating Procedure
  • Liaising with Estates and outside contractors

General housekeeping of the teaching environment

  • Monitor stocks and maintain accurate inventories of equipment, glassware, chemicals and consumables
  • Ensure all substances awaiting disposal are labelled, segregated, and stored correctly and maintain accurate disposal records
  • Maintain and clean equipment and systems to a high standard

This is a full-time (36.25 hour), permanent role. Job share arrangements may be considered.
