About the Role

The Research Assistant will contribute to a trial of a brief psychological intervention for people who present to Emergency Departments having self-harmed. They will work with programme lead, Prof Rose McCabe and Dr Sally O’Keeffe, programme manager at City, University of London. They will be based at the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry, Queen Mary University of London. The role will involve recruiting patients at participating Emergency Departments, obtaining consent and collecting outcome data.

About You

The postholder will have a first degree in health or social science (i.e. psychology, sociology, clinical studies). They will have experience working with people with mental health problems, conducting and delivering high quality quantitative research and experience of working with NHS staff. They will be able and willing to travel between hospital sites in/around London and willing to work outside of office hours (including evening and weekends).

About the Institute

A brief psychological intervention has been developed and a pilot study has been conducted in preparation for a Randomised Controlled Trial that will begin in February 2022. The trial aims to assess the clinical and cost effectiveness of the intervention in reducing repeat hospital attendance for self-harm. This trial will be conducted across 10+ Emergency Departments (EDs) in London, the South West and Midlands. We will recruit 1088 participants: half of whom will receive treatment as usual and half of whom will receive the intervention. Participants will be followed up for 18-months. The post is based at the Unit for Social and Community Psychiatry. The post if fixed term for 34 months, with an expected start date in March 2022. The starting salary will be Grade 4, Junior Research Training Zone (point 24 to 26); £32,087 to £33,824 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
