This group is multidisciplinary, bringing together expertise in management science, operational research, decision analysis, operations management, systems and decision-making. The group is committed to improving management practice by designing and implementing analytic approaches that help make better business and policy decisions. Such approaches are typically supported by models that can often be represented mathematically or visually and built using specialist software.

Research priority areas

Within the Management Science and Operations academic group we are especially keen to receive PhD research proposals in the following areas:

  • Improving management by designing and implementing analytic approaches that help make better operational, strategic or policy decisions
  • Developing new methodologies and approaches to the analysis of data in a business or policy making context, typically with the use of specialist software
  • Contributing analytical insights and solutions to a range of problems within such domains as health, transport, logistics and supply chain management, process improvement, group decision making, assessment of efficiency of organisations and emergency management

Entry requirements:

At least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) with a preference for a UK Masters degree (with average programme mark of no less than 65%) or International equivalent. English Language requirement of IELTS band 7.0 or above with not less than 7.0 in each component.

Funding information:

The studentship provides a minimum tax free stipend of £15,609 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK rate. International (including EU) students may apply however the total value of the studentship will be used to cover the cost of the International tuition fee.

Please note that studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied within the School. Funding decisions will not be confirmed until early 2022.
