About the role

The post of Senior Research Software Engineer on the project FAIR Epigraphy offers an exciting opportunity to take a leading role in the application of linked data approaches to a significant area of ancient world studies. Ancient epigraphy has a long history of engagement with the digital humanities, an extensive and developed international community, and a rich dataset ready for development. You will additionally have the opportunity to be part of a major new initiative to support and develop digital scholarship in the humanities within the University of Oxford.

You will be based at the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents in the Faculty of Classics. The role is part of the FAIR Epigraphy project, an international partnership led by Professor Jonathan Prag (University of Oxford) and Professor Marietta Horster (University of Mainz). In the second and third years, this post will also be partly funded by - and part of - the Digital Scholarship at Oxford hub. At this stage, you will take part in the development, application and support of linked data approaches across a wider range of Oxford humanities projects.

You will be expected primarily to work alongside the two PIs and a post-doctoral researcher (based at Mainz). You will lead on the work of standards adoption and development of interoperability by existing and new projects, as well as building the tools and infrastructure for the publication of both standards and data to ensure the data’s accessibility for research. The position will involve work on the establishment and maintenance of the technical architecture, and its exemplary implementation with one or more pilot projects. You will work directly with key projects and partners, both within Oxford and beyond (including the US and Europe), to enable the adoption of such standards, the generation of linked data, and its initial exploitation for research. You will also work on documentation, training, and the publication of results, including the authoring of relevant research articles.

In the second phase of the post (months 13-36), while continuing to work on FAIR Epigraphy, you will begin to work with a range of researchers and projects across the University as part of the Digital Scholarship at Oxford hub. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a major University Strategic Research Fund investment to support the development of digital scholarship activities in the Humanities and the wider university, with a specific focus on embedding linked open data in research.

About you

You will hold a PhD/DPhil in information engineering and computer science, informatics and related fields; or have equivalent experience.

You will have demonstrable experience of development with web frameworks and associated programming languages, suitable for implementing the FAIR Epigraphy linked data model.

You will have a high level of competency in more than one of the following technologies: RDF/Linked Data, CIDOC CRM, JSON or JSON-LD, RESTful API development, Python or JavaScript.

You will also be able to work with partners from a variety of specialisms and backgrounds, particularly from the humanities, collaborating in an interdisciplinary and international setting, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
