Reporting to Professor Tian Yuan Tan (Principal Investigator), the post holder will be a member of the research project TEXTCOURT: Linking the Textual Worlds of Chinese Court Theater, ca. 1600-1800, funded by the European Research Council (ERC). The project will produce the first textual studies of Chinese court drama underpinned by the first ever digital archive of Chinese court drama and related foreign records. The post holder will have responsibility for providing support for textual research and contributing to the construction of the project’s digital database under the guidance of the PI and the junior postdoctoral researchers.

The Research Assistant will manage their own research and administrative activities, within guidelines provided by senior team members. They will contribute to the wider project planning and participate in group research activities, select, follow and adapt specialist methodologies to further the project, and identify suitable alternatives where information or research material is restricted. The Research Assistant will contribute to the construction of the project’s digital text database by digitising sources and editing the extracted text, gather analyse and present textual data from a variety of sources, and undertake comprehensive and systematic literature reviews.

You will hold a master’s degree in Chinese Studies or a related field, and will be working towards a doctorate in Chinese Literature or a related field. The successful candidate will have an advanced reading ability in modern and classical Chinese, an ability to manage their own research and administrative activities, and excellent bibliographic skills and experience with using digital databases for textual research. You will also have excellent communication skills, experience of following and adapting methodologies, experience of manuscript transcription and digital editing, and strong IT skills.

This position is based in central Oxford. This is a part-time (12 hours per week, 0.32 FTE), fixed-term position between 1 March 2022 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and 28 February 2023 (12 months).
