Contractual Hours: 37.5 hours a week between the hours of 9:00AM and 6:00PM – Monday to Friday. Some occasional weekend work may also be required.

Person Specification

This post has a central role in maintaining our national standing as a centre of excellence. The Student Support Advisor will have a key role in supporting the Head of Student Services, Deputy Head of Student Services and our Student Support team ensuring that all aspects of BIMM’s Student Support provision are delivered in line with the requirements of our key educational partners and provides all of our students with the best professional care possible. This covers a range of services we are proud to be able to offer to our students. Support services include academic and pastoral tutorials, health awareness programmes, counselling, learning support, mental health awareness, English language support.

The Student Support Advisor will make a significant contribution to the on-going monitoring of all aspects of student progress including attendance, retention and achievement, and will ensure that timely and effective interventions are made to support students, ensuring they get the most out of their studies and time at BIMM.

The role is a great opportunity for staff who are looking to further or start a career in student support or pastoral care, possibly from an FE College or Student Union. Within the team we are able to offer staff development opportunities to enable them to become specialists within a field in Student Services.

Essential Criteria for Applicants:

• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels
• High level of accuracy in data entry
• Familiarity of working in an office environment on a face to face basis(currently this is done a rota basis to comply with COVID safety regulations).
• Computer literate & advanced level of Microsoft Office skills
• An empathetic and considerate demeanour
• Ability to work within a busy team, as a team player
• Experience of providing advice and guidance to students and/or young people in a professional or voluntary capacity

Desirable Criteria

• Experience of working in a student support environment
• Experience in either Further or Higher Education
• A background in music or creative industries – either in work, studies or personal practice
• Understanding of common pastoral issues that can affect student retention in Higher and Further Education

Accountabilities

The post holder will report to the Head of Student Services and will be required to meet the listed key accountabilities:

1. To support the Head of Student Services and the Student Support Team in the provision of a high-quality student support service in line with the requirements of the Higher Education and Further Education sectors and BIMM’s educational partners.

2. To contribute to the effective operation of the BIMM’s tutorial provision including academic and pastoral tutorials, learning support, health awareness programme, and counselling; to ensure the maintenance of up-to-date and detailed tutorial records using BIMM’s standard documentation.

3. To take the lead on attendance monitoring; to co-ordinate the timely creation and distribution of registers and the analysis of attendance data.

4. Providing front line advice and guidance to students on a wide variety of different subjects through email, phone and face to face communication

5. To assist with the monitoring of student progress in terms of retention, academic progress and achievement and to ensure that timely and effective interventions are made where required to provide support to students and get them back on track, working closely with Course Leaders; primarily taking the lead on chasing students who fail to complete assignments and meeting with them as necessary.

6. To assist with BIMM’s mitigation processes in line with the requirements of educational partners; to ensure that Course Leaders and administrators are advised of all outcomes from student claims for mitigation.

7. To assist with the cycle of student rep meetings, liaising with Course Leaders and attending & taking minutes as required.

8. To contribute to BIMM’s open days and student induction programme, including the production of high quality induction materials.
