Are you an enthusiastic field and laboratory worker, looking to join a friendly and dynamic team of freshwater scientists? We have a fantastic opportunity in the Lake Ecosystems Group at Lancaster! Much of the fieldwork will be conducted on lakes in the beautiful and iconic surroundings of the English Lake District, as well as further afield.

You will undertake field-based sampling of fresh waters, including boat-based monitoring, allowing us to conduct long-term research on the way in which our freshwaters are changing. You will work on a diverse range of other projects with tasks focused in the laboratory, at outdoor experiment facilities, and in the field, making a major contribution to the ongoing long-term and high-resolution monitoring of sentinel fresh waters in the UK natural environment, as well as at a large outdoor experimental facility. As such, the role will support important work to detect and understand patterns and drivers of environmental change.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist in campaign-based and routine fieldwork, including boat-based long-term ecosystem monitoring in the English Lake District.
  • Conduct laboratory analysis of water samples to determine their chemical properties and plankton communities.
  • Collect and analyse water and biological samples and measurements from a large-scale outdoor experimental facility, and assist in experimental set-up. 
  • Assist in the calibration and maintenance of sensors on lake monitoring buoys, at outdoor experimental facilities, and in the laboratory, in order to ensure sustained data collection and high data quality.

Selection Criteria

Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience

  • A HNC/HND or degree qualification in environmental science, ecology or geography
  • Knowledge and demonstrable experience of maintaining/deploying electronic field equipment
  • Knowledge demonstrable experience of fieldwork - sample collection in measurements

Skills 

  • Knows when to seek advice and guidance when solving problems. 
  • Able to work independently and manages own time effectively. 
  • Makes active contributions and provides support to other team members. 
  • Able to manage a changing workload of long and short terms tasks
  • Effective IT skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Other Requirements

  • Full driving license to access remote field sites
  • Willingness to participate in fieldwork and boat handling
  • Willingness to participate in laboratory work
  • Willingness and enthusiasm to learn new skills and undertake training

Desirable skills 

  • Previous boat handling experience
  • Experience of towing trailers
  • Knowledge/ experience of phytoplankton and/ or zooplankton identification
