About The Inner Temple

Anyone who wishes to become a barrister in England and Wales must join one of the four Inns of Court. Established around the middle of the fourteenth century and located in what is now central London, the role of the Inns has changed over time. However, while most of legal education has been devolved to higher education institutions, the Inns still continue to play an essential part in education and training for the Bar.

About the Education and Training Department

The Inner Temple fulfils its role in training and supporting both student and qualified barristers through Education and Training activities, these activities are arranged by the Inn’s dedicated Education and Training Department. The Department is responsible for:

  • Supporting students in schools and colleges, and prospective Bar students with a specific focus on equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Scholarships for the law conversion course, vocational training, disability grants, pupillage and internship
  • The training of its student members (alongside the approved education and training organisations that provide the vocational qualification component)
  • Advocacy training for pupils and new practitioners
  • Continuing professional development for established practitioners
  • Support schemes including mentoring, marshalling, mock interview schemes

While leading the education and training of student and qualified barristers, other departments like the Library and the Inn’s Treasury’s team make up the totality of the Inn’s educational offer.
