Research Assistant / Clinical Scientist

University of Oxford - Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research

Location: Oxford
Salary: £33,309 to £40,927 Grade 7, per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 13th January 2022
Closes: 31st January 2022
Job Ref: 155476

The appointee will participate in a large, collaborative project investigating the use of convalescent plasma in the UK and across Europe as a therapeutic agent for COVID-19. The work will primarily require the development and application of a range of serology assays for antibody to SARS-CoV-2 (the causative agent of COVID-19) and to use these to characterise the breadth and antigen specificity of the serological response to infection in previous infected individuals. The primary method used will be a standardised live virus microneutralisation assay, utilising different SARS-CoV-2 variants, which will serve as a benchmark for calibrating assays used elsewhere for convalescent plasma donors. In-depth analysis of the antibody content, e.g. affinity binding analysis, epitope mapping, antibody isotyping, as well as quantitative RT-PCR for virus detection, will provide supplemental data for investigations of potential relationships between antibody profile, donor characteristics and recipient clinical outcomes through coordination with those working in other workstrands in the project.

The appointee will be working under supervision of Prof Peter Simmonds and Dr Heli Harvala (NHS Blood and Transplant) and Prof David Roberts (NHSBT, University of Oxford). The laboratory work will be based at the Peter Medawar Building for Pathogen Research in central Oxford, working as part of a larger team of scientists with a broad remit in fields of molecular epidemiology, serosurveillance and virus/host interactions. The work will proceed alongside concurrent investigations of SARS-CoV-2 serology in collaboration with PHE. Although work is largely collaborative and linking to the existing research programmes in England and beyond, there will also be opportunities to develop candidates own interests.

This role is full time and fixed term for 6 months in the first instance, with likely extension for 12 months or longer.

Only applications received on or before 12:00 on 31/01/2022 will be considered.
