Research Associate in Modelling the Electronic Structure of Plasmonic Nanoparticles

Imperial College London

Location: London
Salary: £41,593 to £49,210 Per annum*
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 14th January 2022
Closes: 14th February 2022

Location: South Kensington

Contract: Full-Time, Fixed Term contract until 31 October 2022 with a possibility of an extension

Hot carriers generated from the decay of localized surface plasmons in metallic nanostructures are promising for developing highly efficient solar energy conversion devices, such as solar cells or photocatalysts. However, despite much work fundamental questions about hot carrier processes remain unsolved and the lack of atomistic insight into these processes is holding back the field. To address this challenge, the post holder will contribute to the development of novel atomistic modelling techniques to simulate the interaction of light with nanoparticles and carry out calculations to discover novel nanomaterials with tailored compositions, shapes and environments to optimize the generation of hot carriers for specific applications.

This post holder will be situated in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London, and will be part of the Thomas Young Centre (http://www.thomasyoungcentre.org/about-tyc/), a world leading organisation spanning four universities across London which focuses on the study of materials properties and behaviour through the application of theory and computer simulation. The project is led by Dr Johannes Lischner (http://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/j.lischner).

Duties and responsibilities

  • To develop and apply electronic structure techniques for studying electronic properties of plasmonic nanoparticles
  • To develop novel large-scale tight-binding codes for supercomputing environments
  • To carry out calculations for the discovery of novel hot-carrier materials
  • To prepare material for presentation in oral and poster formats and to deliver presentations at seminars, conferences and workshops.
  • To interact with the project partners and collaborators who have expertise in experimental characterization of plasmonic nanoparticles and large-scale tight-binding simulations
  • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings and to ensure that research data is managed appropriately.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694- £39,888 per annum.
