Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.
Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities and talented staff are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.
About the Role
We now have an excellent opportunity for a talented Windows Computer Systems Administrator or Assistant Systems Administrator to join the Diamond Scientific Computing team and make a real contribution to cutting edge science by providing computing support to the Diamond Electron Microscopy (EM) activities.
EM systems are a mixture of primarily Microsoft, but also Linux and some specialised technologies. Due to an expansion of EM activity this new opportunity requires somebody with skills that can cut across the technologies used by EM and similar instruments, providing an opportunity to learn and integrate new technologies such as low latency network fabrics and novel storage solutions.
The Scientific Computing Team is responsible for all the science-enabling computing that our researchers require to get the best results as quickly as possible. You will pitch in with any challenges that come our way, there is no limit to what you can learn. Innovation and creativity are encouraged, as well as a desire to automate as much as practically possible.
At the Senior level you will contribute to the design and development of high-performance computer systems and use your technical experience for system commissioning and preparation of Service Level Agreements.

The role is based on-site at Diamond in Oxfordshire with no pre-agreed home working arrangement.
