Background and Role

The Invisible East programme at the University of Oxford is currently looking for a Project Manager to support their thriving, high performing team. This is an exciting role and the perfect step into a project management role in the charity and academic sector. If you want to work on behalf of a charitable research programme doing some meaningful work with excellent rewards and career advancement, then the Invisible East Project Manager role may be your ideal job.

As the Project Manager, you will be on the programme’s backend, communicating with team members including five research staff, as well as liaising with administrative and operational partners including telecommunications, social media, and IT, cultural heritage, and art.

You will be proactive, enthusiastic, and outgoing. You must have a confident demeanour, excellent communication skills, have a positive attitude with a passion to make a real difference.

About the Team

Oxford University’s Invisible East programme is the first single, coherent research programme dedicated to the study of the Islamicate East, that is a large Eurasian region stretching from Iran to China, which includes some of the oldest civilisations in the world.

The programme is based at the world-renowned Oriental Institute at the University of Oxford, and is led by its director, Dr Arezou Azad. The team includes five researchers and an administrator. Invisible East makes texts and research accessible to the broadest possible audience through a website,  social media engagement, online seminars, conferences, and scholarly publications. 

Key Information

  • Salary - £30-£40 p/h dependent on experience
  • Starting with 4-6 hours per week with a view to increase over a 12-18 month contract

Key Responsibilities:

  • Managing the team’s projects (using Trello task cards and timelines)
  • Providing general administrative support and project management to the core team
  • Travel booking and management
  • Supporting team with conferences
  • Holding the team accountable to deadlines and project deliverables
  • Potential diary management
  • Ad-hoc administrative tasks as and when required
  • Overseeing application to register Invisible East as a non-profit 

Desired skills and competencies:

  • Understanding of Trello, Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Confident interpersonal skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Multi-tasking - there will a lot going on at any one time
  • Flexibility to work on different tasks as the needs of the team evolve
  • Enthusiasm and self-starter attitude - we are looking for someone who is results focused and driven, with a ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Would be fantastic to have:

  • Experience working with teams in an academic and/or charitable environment
  • Communications experience. The team are also looking for someone to support them in the management of the website and social media – 8 additional hours per month
