About the team/job

In this role you will join an established Database team of database administrators in order to support the ongoing database operations. The main duties for this post are:  DBA of MySQL and MongoDB.

The Database Team provides day-to-day Database Administration support , database performance tuning and query optimization for the production, development, test database environments to the Bioinformatics and Technical Services and Research Teams of EBI who are also referred to as end-users of the Database Service. 
The large central database environment is deployed over an in-house IT infrastructure based on Linux and virtualisation and incorporates multi-Terabyte databases across geographically distributed data centres. 

Your role

This is a technical hands-on role on MySQL and MongoDB. The candidate will work on tasks of low to higher complexities under the technical guidance of the Technical Leads and the Line Manager who will guide you across your career progression. The progression within this level involves taking on increasing complexity tasks, work on larger scale database backend improvement and innovation projects, and customer-facing activities involving the EBI end-users  (such as a new database backend,  the review of an existing one, database migrations).

A typical day of work involves: 

  • starting the day by checking the health of the current deployment and raising any emergencies, checking communication channels and the issues reported by the end-users;
  • attending the daily stand up meeting to communicate the daily activities (projects/issues) and any blockers;
  • the rest of the day will involve conducting the identified activities, monitoring the trouble ticketing system, be prepared to a change of priorities should any emergency arise, update documentation or create new if required;
  • attending planned meetings;
  • be available on the remote communication channels during working hours.  

You have

  • Degree in Computer Science or an equivalent discipline or demonstrable experience and learning
  • Proven experience in a Database Administrator role ideally with similar responsibilities for 5 years or more
  • Solid hands-on with SQL, Python, Shell Scripting
  • Well organised, pay attention to detail and able to work to tight deadlines
  • Innovation and demonstrated willingness to  take on new challenges and expanding the current skills to next level based on the demand
  • Ability to work within a team and in collaboration with others 

You might also have

Experience in the following is desirable but not essential:

  • Cloud knowledge
  • Container knowledge
  • Experience with working under Service Management practice
  • Understanding of Project frameworks concepts
