Programme Director, STEM Grand Challenge

University of Warwick

Job purpose

Warwick is one of the world’s leading universities for teaching and research. With an absolute commitment to excellence and an ambition to challenge the status quo we’ve inspired positive change, sparked innovation and created opportunity across our local community, our region, the country and beyond. We’re incredibly proud of our global reputation as a centre of excellence for learning and research. It is our mission to point the way ahead and open our doors even wider – to work hand in hand with industry, to connect with academics and partners around the world, to bring opportunity to our region and our country, and to engage students, staff and communities from all walks of life, all parts of society, all cultural backgrounds.

We’re reimagining the way we deliver discovery-led and translational STEM research in a data-driven era and how we inspire and teach future generations of scientists and engineers. To achieve these ambitions, the STEM Grand Challenge was created to work with our Academic Departments and Faculties to consider the key enablers of innovation and scientific discovery in a changing world.

The role

As the Programme Director for the STEM Grand Challenge, you will provide academic leadership and oversight of the programme. Working with stakeholders across the University, including senior officers, lay members of Council, Faculty Chairs and Heads of Departments, you will ensure the STEM Grand Challenge makes a substantial, sustained contribution to the University’s wider strategy, delivering our ambitious vision and goals.

You will lead on the design and delivery of the Science Precinct, a new £500m capital programme which will be built in the heart of the campus. To support our ambitious plans for STEM growth and transformation, and to tackle issues with the ageing infrastructure, the Science Precinct will include an innovative cross-disciplinary STEM teaching building and research facilities designed to support teams across a range of disciplines including Engineering and Physical Sciences. The Science Precinct is in RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Stage 2 design with the first phase of construction due to commence within the next two years.

About you

Educated to PhD-level with a distinguished track record of achievement in a STEM discipline, your outstanding project management skills will inspire and engage people in the development of ideas and the successful delivery of strategic projects.

You will have relevant experience of inclusive leadership and management within a University or elsewhere, and experience in the delivery of complex change and capital programmes. Your experience in managing significant budgets will be vital along with a keen appreciation of cost and income drivers influencing both departments and the wider University.

You will need to have excellent communication, negotiation and persuasion skills, vital in maintaining good relationships with stakeholders and strategic partners. Once appointed, you will need to quickly establish credibility, building partnerships and influence at all levels.

This an exciting opportunity to bring together the academic community to shape and refine the vision and priorities for STEM at Warwick and ensure they are translated into tangible outcomes.

The post is anticipated to be full-time although consideration will be given to suitably qualified candidates who wish to conduct personal research alongside this role.

Interviews will take place on the University of Warwick Campus.
