This project aims at developing advanced digital surgical assistive technology using Augmented Reality (AR) for breast cancer surgery.
Surgical removal of breast cancer from surrounding healthy breast tissue (conservative breast surgery) has been the mainstay of breast cancer treatment for many decades. The established technique requires the operating surgeon to assess the location, size and shape of tumour, and judge the position of the boundaries between tumour and healthy tissue, with the aim of removing all microscopic tumour with a margin of healthy tissue. This minimises the risk of tumour regrowth.
AR technology provides interactive media by superimposing virtual information onto the real-world views of a point of interest through wearable head-mounted displays. A recent study focusing on AR for medicine has demonstrated the great potential of the advanced surgical AR technology as well as major technological and clinical challenges in the field of AR in surgery. This project builds on BU’s established research expertise in VR and AR technologies for medicine and the close research collaborations between BU and the University Hospitals Dorset NHS to develop cutting-edge results with far-reaching research impact.
