Senior Data Scientist - COSMIC - Cancer Research

COSMIC (Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer), is an expertly curated and world-renowned scientific cancer genomics data resource.  COSMIC captures the overwhelming flood of cancer genomics data and transforms it into datasets and tools that are used by tens of thousands of commercial, academic and clinical users every day. Commercial biotech, pharma and drug discovery companies pay for access to the data so that COSMIC (as a non-profit organisation) can provide the data resource free to support, research and development for the academic community.

We are looking for a senior data scientist to identify and apply analytical methods to COSMIC data including testing new approaches.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Building algorithms and data analysis workflows to merge, interrogate, and extract data for internal and external use.
  • Using machine learning tools and statistical techniques to identify patterns and significant associations in the genetic data
  • Guiding and assisting the tech team in designing and building bespoke analytical environment to use internally

This is an exciting opportunity to join the science team; you will need to have strong scientific understanding and a research centric approach. This role could be suitable for a recent PhD graduate looking to join a collaborative team and work together to support cancer research.

Essential Skills

Technical Skills:

  • PhD in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or Statistics 
  • Experience with identifying meaningful associations, trends and patterns in complex datasets 
  • Experience in database interrogation and use of analytic tools 
  • Substantial knowledge of at least one programming language 
  • Experience with visualising complex datasets 
  • Understanding biological principles of the flow of genetic information 

Behavioural Skills:

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Self-motivated, able to work on your own and organise your own workload 
  • Demonstrated ability to independently run a data science project 
  • Excellent communication and effective team-working skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to write documentation or publications in English
