Project Overview

This project represents a unique opportunity to undertake a fully funded PhD studentship, sponsored by Boyd Technologies Ashington UK Ltd, in the area of thermal management for electric vehicle battery systems. The aim is to demonstrate improved thermal management of high-power battery systems by radically rethinking the thermal management problem - moving away from traditional approaches of air and liquid cooling.

Two-phase heat pipes and encapsulated graphite are enabling technologies for deployment in high performance lithium-ion batteries. Successful integration at either the cell or system scale has the potential to underpin significant improvements in performance and extended life.

The successful PhD candidate will have the opportunity to design, construct, and experimentally validate novel battery concepts that include, but are not constrained too (a) heat pipe superconductors integrated into large format cylindrical cells and (b) flat ultrathin vapour chambers or encapsulated graphite sheets integrated between pouch/prismatic cells or embedded directly into the structure of the battery. Additional novelty will comprise the use of in-cell instrumentation to quantify thermal performance with respect to “core” temperature vs traditional methods of surface temperature evaluation.

The focus of this PhD is primarily on experimental research conducted within the WMG Energy Innovation Centre with agreed periods of on-site work at Boyd Technologies. The researcher will be required to design, implement, and manage novel multidisciplinary experiments to generate the data required to underpin their recommendations and conclusions.
