Applications are invited for a PhD studentship at the department of Aeronautics on experimental and theoretical fluid mechanics, under the supervision of Dr Kostas Steiros. The project will be held in collaboration with the University of Grenoble through the joint Imperial – France (CNRS) PhD programme.
Obstacles immersed in high Reynolds number flows develop wakes, where kinetic energy irreversibly becomes heat, through the process of turbulence. This phenomenon poses a major challenge in wind energy applications, as obstacles like hills or upstream turbines can be abundant in wind farms, significantly draining the available energy resource. In this project we aim to (i) recreate in the laboratory hills and other obstacles encountered in wind farms, (ii) devise and test strategies to re-energize their wake and increase the overall farm efficiency, and (iii) study the evolving turbulence properties based on a recently developed theoretical framework.
The studentship is for 3.5 years and will provide full coverage of tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend of approximately £17,609 for Home, EU and International students. Candidates with a strong background in Engineering, Applied Mathematics and Physics, or a related discipline, are encouraged to apply.
