The British Museum is seeking a Curator: Oceania to join the department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas. The postholder will undertake high-profile research into the Pacific and Australia (Oceania) collections of the museum, taking responsibility for their curation, development, and presentation, and making a major contribution to the management and leadership of the Museum in support of the Museum’s masterplan, the Rosetta Project, as well as the Operating Plan and all relevant Museum strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To lead major research projects on, and beyond, the Oceania collection including projects involving external partners
  • To raise money to support research projects on and beyond the Oceania collection, including projects involving external partners
  • To make the Oceania collection publicly accessible via high-profile publication, digital, display, and broadcast projects
  • To curate the Oceania collections, improving catalogue and documentation for artefact and pictorial collections.
  • To manage and support the visits of source community members to the collection, and other research visits.
  • To develop new permanent displays of the Oceania collection within the context of the masterplan and lead-curate exhibitions relating to the Oceania collection both on and off-site.
  • Leading, managing and motivating curatorial and research teams, including responsibility for managing performance and supporting professional development, and providing support to the Keeper.
  • To work as a leading team member with colleagues across the Museum, leading working parties and committees.
  • To assist with enquiries from the public in person, in writing, by telephone and via e-mail
  • To change the focus of work as needed in line with Museum priorities
  • All other duties as directed.

Person Specification:

You will be educated to degree level in Anthropology or a related subject. A member of relevant learned societies, you will be an externally recognised authority in a relevant subject area with an extensive publication record in relevant subjects including publications of internationally recognised merit.

With experience of managing projects and budgets, you will be an open and effective communicator with excellent skills in teamwork and the management of curatorial and research teams.

Experience of working in a museum environment is critical, as is experience of display, research, publication, and broadcast projects on Indigenous Oceanic collections. You will have a proven track record of securing research grants, and be able to lead with internal and external stakeholders across the museum and academic worlds.
