PhD Opportunity Title: Repurposing of E-Waste for Sustainable Product Design and Manufacture
Advert Text: An estimated 50 million tons of e-waste are produced globally each year the majority of which goes directly into landfills and incinerators. According to a report by UNEP the amount of e-waste being produced, including mobile phones and computers, could rise by as much as 500 percent over the next decade in countries such as India.
The end-of-life management of electronics waste (e-waste) has been predominantly characterized by recycling, with only a fraction of high-tech products prepared for reuse through repair, refurbish, and remanufacture due to the inherent limitations of these methods. Meanwhile, there is a huge demand for products in emerging economies that can satisfy basic human needs for food, water, shelter, warmth and safety.
This research will investigate how components and sub-assemblies from e-waste could be repurposed in the sustainable design and manufacture of affordable ‘socially targeted’ products. To-date, current literature mostly presents ad hoc examples of e-waste repurposing and lacks a methodical approach for its adoption as a valuable resource to address social needs and global inequalities. In addition to establishing the fundamental principles, methods and processes, this research will develop case studies to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach.
