Reporting to the College’s General Counsel and working alongside another Legal Counsel, you will be providing high quality legal services to colleagues across Royal Holloway, University of London.
You will be a solicitor or barrister with at least 4 years’ PQE gained in a highly regarded law firm or in-house environment, with a demonstrable passion for the public sector and/or charity sector. It is anticipated that the Legal Counsel will focus primarily on employment and student matters (complaint and academic appeal reviews) and so a proven track record of providing high quality employment law advice (both contentious and non-contentious) is essential but you will also be expected to advise on the full range of legal issues that arise across the College, including commercial contracts, land, charity law, data protection, litigation and IP. It is an interesting and varied role.
You will be a pragmatic, solutions-focussed lawyer, able to support the College to achieve its strategic objectives whilst navigating the complex legal and regulatory landscape within which universities operate. Previous experience within the sector would therefore be beneficial but is not essential. You will possess strong communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively and influence at a senior level, the ability to assess and balance legal risk and reward, and the ability to plan your own workload and deliver to deadlines. You will have line management responsibility for two members of staff including a Paralegal and therefore demonstrable experience of line management and delegation and supervision is required.
In return we offer a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including:
We are operating a hybrid working model, working from the office one or two days per week. Full or part-time hours will be considered.
Please note that we use PQE levels purely as a guide to the minimum level of experience required.
We will consider applications from all candidates who are able to demonstrate the skills necessary to fulfil this role.
Royal Holloway recognises the importance of helping its employees balance their work and home life by offering flexible working arrangements. We are happy to consider a request for flexible working for this post including part time or compressed working hours.

Please note that it will not be possible for the College to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for successful candidates as this role does not fall into one of the standard occupational codes deemed eligible for sponsorship by UK Visas and Immigration. Successful candidates will therefore need to be eligible to work in the UK or have limited leave to remain in the UK and associated right to work for the duration of their employment with the College, in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006.
