CAR was established in 1992.  It is a thriving research centre with an outstanding international reputation as a centre of research excellence and a leading force in the field of psychological and interdisciplinary applied research in appearance, disfigurement, body image and related studies.  Consisting of a diverse group of more than 35 academics, researchers and postgraduate research students, CAR offers a stimulating environment for research and knowledge exchange and is home to an experienced and internationally renowned team who are passionate about delivering authoritative and relevant research which has real world impact.

CAR is one of UWE’s recognized centres of research excellence http://www.uwe.ac.uk/car and has a broad portfolio of externally funded research projects, successful collaborations at international, national and local levels, public engagement and knowledge exchange activities.  The team make a valuable contribution to teaching and student supervision at UWE Bristol.

UWE Bristol are committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity to create an inclusive working environment. We believe this can be achieved through attracting, developing, and retaining a diverse range of staff from many different backgrounds who share our ambition to be a university recognised for the success and impact of our practice-oriented programmes; our strong industry networks and our inclusive global outlook. Equality and Inclusion are genuinely at the heart of all that CAR does – in addition to a very active Diversity Inclusion and Equality group (CARDIE), we run a regular reading/discussion group, and weekly team meetings for all. It is important to us that the team in CAR is diverse and well-represented, therefore we particularly welcome applicants from candidates who would add to the diversity and experiences of our team such as candidates from various cultural and ethnic groups, and candidates who are experts by experiences, as these individuals are currently under-represented at our research centre.
