Leading collaboration between the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust (MLW) and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) based in Malawi, the successful candidate will be focused on expanding research capacity and collaboration in vector biology.

With an emphasis on initiation and delivery of research that generates outputs that are considered internationally excellent; the successful appointee will also develop an excellent personal portfolio of research projects that are relevant to vector-borne disease control. Depending upon experience we will appoint at Senior Lecturer, Reader, or Full Professor level.

Key to the ongoing success of this role will be your ability to provide academic leadership, promote continuous improvement in research performance, guide MLW-LSTM’s research field sites and strengthen capacity for research and knowledge transfer.

Why Join the Vector Biology Department in this key role?

The Department of Vector Biology has a research portfolio spanning from studies on the functional genomics, behaviour, and ecology of disease vectors, to clinical trials, implementation research and the development of tools for monitoring and evaluation of disease transmission.

Our aim is to contribute to the control or elimination of vector borne diseases afflicting the world’s poorest populations. This is an exciting time to join the department as we continue a period of real expansion with key appointments in the department contributing to our ongoing success.

Key areas include (but are not limited to):

  • To lead the MLW-LSTM collaboration in vector biology in Malawi aiming to expand the research capacity and collaboration
  • To undertake academic leadership of vector-borne disease research at the MLW-LSTM site in Malawi, by fostering an appropriate culture for the support and integration of excellent research and teaching
  • To help develop an active research and teaching culture that fosters the highest achievements, encourages originality and innovation, and enriches the learning experience
  • To bear major responsibility for strategic leadership in the development of research agendas and projects
  • Oversee the recruitment, probation and mentoring of new staff at the MLW-LSTM site in Malawi, in accordance with MLW/LSTM policy
  • Manage academic performance, staff development and performance review for appropriate staff
  • As appropriate, manage financial, staffing, and other resources effectively and efficiently within the assigned budget and other agreed parameters to ensure achievement of the MLW-LSTM site strategy and compliance with financial and other controls

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • PhD or equivalent
  • Substantial portfolio of laboratory and/or field research relevant to vector-borne disease control and elimination
  • Significant previous leadership experience in vector borne disease research and implementation
  • Ability to write excellent scientific papers
  • Demonstrated ability to develop productive working relationships with academic & non-academic colleagues
  • Ability to think strategically and gain the support of colleagues to make strategic decisions
