We are looking for two Postdoctoral Researchers in ‘Regional Security in Africa’ and African and Caribbean identities in the UK’ at the Department of Politics and International Studies, SOAS University of London.

This is an exciting opportunity for ambitious and talented early career researchers to establish their careers. They will be given significant scope to design and pursue their own programme of research as part of a talented team working on the project.

About the project

Pan-African frontiers is a highly collaborative and multi-disciplinary project led by Dr Daniel Mulugeta, exploring contemporary intellectual and policy discourse around pan-Africanism. The project intends to understand how we ought to approach ideas from Africa and African diasporas.

About the Postdoctoral Researchers

The two postdoctoral researchers will be a core part of a team and will each carry out independent research programmes under the direction of the PI, involving substantial periods of fieldwork in Africa and/or the UK.

The two roles are described below. Applicants are encouraged to develop further and new ideas within the broader remit.

Postdoctoral Research 1 (Regional Security in Africa)

The project focuses on transnational security challenges facing African states. We are particularly interested in scholars with expertise in cases of regional security issues in Africa. The research will explore questions around transboundary conflict, institutionalised conflict resolution mechanisms, peacekeeping interventions, and the impact these have on continental and regional cooperation efforts. Your research could cover West Africa and the Sahel, the Great Lakes, the Horn of Africa or case studies from different regions/countries of Africa..

The researcher will have a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. Security studies, International relations, Social anthropology, Political science, Development studies etc.), and a track record of research in Africa, including fieldwork experience. They will have begun to establish an academic career through activities such as publishing and/or organising workshops/conferences, and they should be able to show clear potential for academic excellence. Skills in French, Portuguese or any African language are desirable.

Postdoctoral Research 2 (African and Caribbean identities in the UK)

The project focuses on diaspora politics, exploring the varied manifestations of African and African-Caribbean identities in Britain. The research will explore questions about historic and ongoing social justice movements, patterns of pan-racial, multi-local or cosmopolitan identity claims and affiliations, and the question of what it means to be Black in Britain today. It particularly explores the reconceptualisation of pan-African connections and the complex demographic and inter-group dynamics in the UK.

The researcher will have a PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. Black Diaspora studies, History, Politics,  Social anthropology, etc.), and a track record of research in diaspora politics, including fieldwork experience. They will have begun to establish an academic career through activities such as publishing, organising workshops/conferences, and be able to show a clear potential for academic excellence.
