About the team/job

Do you want to be part of the international and dynamic team working on an ambitious multi partner project on marine biodiversity? EMBL is coordinating the EU funded project “BIOcean5D: Marine biodiversity assessment and prediction across spatial, temporal and human scales”, and looking to fill a central position of its project manager. The project starts 1st of December 2022, and involves 31 partner institutions.

BIOcean5D is a huge international collaboration between European laboratories and stakeholders that engage in the sampling, analysis and theoretical understanding of coastal ecosystems, including their societal and economic value. It is based on various datasets including the upcoming Traversing European Coastlines expedition (TREC) and will also have a strong public engagement and outreach component. BIOcean5D will generate the data, knowledge, theory, monitoring and modelling tools necessary to sustainably measure, understand, value, and predict marine biodiversity for sustainable management and long-term preservation. 

Your role

We are seeking a self-motivated Project Manager to become part of our dynamic team, based in Heidelberg, Germany. Your role would include (but not limited to): 

  • Manage Project coordination and implementation on an operational and administrative level, including monitoring of project outcomes and ensuring their timely delivery
  • Follow and manage project timetables and milestones, identifying implementation risks and working on solutions 
  • Ensure that the Deliverables, scientific and financial Reports are assembled and delivered correctly and on time. 
  • Schedule and support the organization of project meetings and events, establishing meeting agendas and recording meeting outcomes
  • Manage and help organize the content of the project’s webpage
  • Manage communication to third parties and stakeholders during project implementation 

You have

To qualify for the role, you must have:

  • Enthusiasm for the topic of coastal ecosystems and to engage in a vibrant and international academic environment
  • Ideally at least 3 years of collaborative grants project management experience, preferably in a coordinating role of an EC funded project
  • Excellent knowledge of English (both written and oral). 
  • Responsibility, consistency, and ability to work to strict deadlines
  • Travel availability (Europe)
  • Excellent command of MS Office, also desired a good knowledge of project management software
  • A team player with strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills. 

You might also have

  • Academic background with a Bachelor or/and a Master’s degree in Life sciences, preferably Marine Biology, Ecology or related discipline
  • Knowledge of French or German
  • Knowledge of EU financing schemes and reports. 
  • Experience with online content management (WordPress or similar)

We are an innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from many nations, operating across six sites: in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble, and Rome.

Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review. The pathway for Course and Conference Office staff  at EMBL is commonly up to three consecutive three-year contracts, with clear progression opportunities within the team.
