Applications are invited for the above post based within the School of Biosciences at the Sutton Bonington Campus.

The purpose of this role is to provide general technical support to the day-to-day operation of our Sensory Science Centre, Food Processing Facility and Dietetics Kitchen and allied facilities. These facilities support research as well as teaching programmes in the School. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical support to assist with the smooth running of the work areas.

The role holder will be responsible for the upkeep, and routine cleaning and maintenance of these facilities to ensure food safety and hygiene standards are maintained to excellent standards. As well as carrying out routine care, maintenance and repair of general lab equipment personally or through conjunction with others. 

The role holder will be responsible for maintaining stock and ordering ingredients and consumables for the area and collecting lab resources from stores. This will also involve assisting with the disposal of laboratory waste, helping clear fridges and freezers and carrying out routine tasks such as checking first aid boxes, flow testing of fume hoods and safety cabinets, conducting ladder inspections and monthly housekeeping checks, PAT testing, helping with monthly lab cleans etc. 

Through this role the successful candidate will also be required to set up and participate in practical classes. This will involve supervising students and delivering training, providing guidance and practical instruction in relevant techniques and equipment.

The role holder will also be responsible for creating/writing and maintaining safety documentation, maintenance schedules, and inventories of ingredients and chemicals to ensure that the department complies with work related legal and health and safety policies. 

The role-holder will support the Senior Technical Manager and the Technical Manager with building issues and contractors and will also be required to support other areas within the school where skills and techniques could be shared and/or utilised, or where routine technical support is required. 

Full training will be provided. 

Candidates must have attained a minimum of two A-Levels in a relevant subject, or equivalent qualifications, plus some work experience in a relevant role. Alternatively, candidates with significant experience of working in a relevant technical role will be considered. 

Prior experience of working in a relevant technical environment in the food sector is highly desirable, as are having attained Food Safety and Hygiene and HACCP accreditations. Understanding of regulations and procedures governing Health and Safety in the workplace is essential.

This is a part-time post, 29 hours per week, to be worked Monday to Friday within core operational hours of 9am-4.30pm. The position is offered on a permanent contract and available with an immediate start.
