Lecturer in Medical Physics

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Medical University of Bahrain

Reporting To:     Deputy Head of School of Medicine or Nominee  

Objectives:  

  • Deliver teaching, learning and assessment of the RCSI undergraduate programs in Medical Physics and related subjects.
  • Conduct and publish high-quality research in physics and/or related field.
  • Participate in community activities within the University 

The duties of this post will include:

Academic:

  • Contribute to the facilitation and delivery of the undergraduate medical school teaching programme in the Foundation Year and/or as required by the Head of School.
  • Organise programmes of instruction, including lectures, tutorials and practical activities, and assessment in the Foundation Year.
  • Liaise with the Department and Year Leads and Academic staff regarding curriculum, examination and research matters, as appropriate.
  • Liaise closely with the Foundation Year Director regarding curriculum development, teaching programmes and examinations.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students and providing advocacy as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the examination and assessment processes of RCSI, including the grading of examinations, papers and projects.
  • Maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.
  • Ensure course curricula and materials are kept up-to-date.
  • Promote innovative education technologies as appropriate to support the course content. 

Research:

  • Pursue independent or collaborative research relevant to the strategic plan of the University.

General:

  • Participate in community activities within the University such as membership of various university committees relating to research, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and administrative activities when requested.
  • Ensure that all RCSI policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Comply with statutory legislation and RCSI rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety.
  • Undertake assignments in other RCSI campuses as may be required from time to time.
  • Undergo programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time.
  • Represent the best interest of RCSI and the Academic Department at all times.
  • Perform such other duties as may be required from time to time.

Requirements

Academic:

  • PhD in Physics orin a closely related discipline.
  • Higher Education Teaching Qualification or equivalent or be prepared to undertake the appropriate training within the first 12 months of employment.
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching and assessment.
  • Sensitivity to cultural issues involved in delivering undergraduate education within a diverse multi-cultural environment.
  • Strong commitment to continuous personal and professional development. 

Research:

  • Recent publications in high-quality journals related to physics and/or related field.
  • Proven ability to attract research funding from internal and/or external bodies.
  • Experience in supervising student research projects. 

General:

  • Excellent spoken and written English skills.
  • Skills in MS Office Suite and Moodle
  • Ability to work alone and as a member of a Team.
  • Effective communication style appropriate to audience and situation.
  • Align people behind the RCSI noble purpose.
  • Ability to act decisively and meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours on occasion.
