SODA - School of Digital Arts

The School of Digital Arts is our response to, and an investment in, screen-based business and technologies. It is a digital skills powerhouse that hosts a diverse programme of degree apprenticeships, continuing professional development, work-based training, foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate courses and resources. It builds on the award-winning strengths of the Manchester School of Art, and brings together creative and craft disciplines, technical and scientific skills, industry partnerships and global research to train the next generation of talent, who will ensure that the UK continues to compete at an international level.

Opened in September of 2021, our new purpose-built £35m School works closely with key cultural and industry partners including: Red Productions, BBC, ITV and HOME to ensure that Greater Manchester has the skills base needed to support its continued growth as a centre of cultural capital and creative innovation. It is estimated that the School will generate an annual boost of £13 million for the local economy. SODA was awarded £14.9m of Government funding through the Greater Manchester Combined Authority - which was matched by the University.

Reader  - Games Art/Design

We are looking to appoint a Reader in Games Art and Games Design, with post holders expected to work towards a promotion to Professor, typically within a period of four to five years.

Games Art and Games Design at SODA are connected to a rapidly growing industry in Manchester, which is reflected in the growing demand for courses as well as the interest in our graduates by industry-leading games companies. Candidates will be expected to have an in-depth level of expertise, skills and knowledge in multiple areas of games development such as Games Art, Games Design, Sound Design for Games, Tool Development, and Programming. The successful applicant will have an international profile in research and/or practice as a games developer with a network of professional and academic contacts.

Experience within an academic and/or professional context is required, along with a versatile approach and ability to contribute to a vibrant and collaborative team across a wide range of digital arts disciplines - to this end, an expansive approach to Games Art and Games Design is sought to match our own vision, where the games engine as an authoring tool may be applied to a range of contexts across media disciplines. Applicants will contribute to the development of a culture of innovative practices in games at SODA, with significant knowledge of collaborative and interdisciplinary practices in the digital arts environment. The Reader will support our educational portfolio through contribution to teaching - significant experience of teaching Games Art and/or Games Design at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level is crucial - as well as delivering high-quality research and/or knowledge exchange.
