Applications are invited for the post of Research Assistant in the group of Professor Michael Coleman in the John van Geest Centre for Brain Repair.

The Department of Clinical Neurosciences is one of the largest Departments in the School of Clinical Medicine and is embedded in several sites on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The John Van Geest Building (VGB), located on the Forvie Site, hosts approximately 70 academic and associated research and administrative staff in a combination of laboratories, offices & clinic space.

The postholder will fulfill two main roles. First, they will support the smooth running of the research laboratory through procurement, routine maintenance and repair of equipment, ensuring stocks of reagents are up to date, correctly stored and aliquoted where appropriate, contribute to training, troubleshooting, etc. Second, they will work with a team investigating the role of proteins in the programmed axon death pathway in axonal disorders (see Coleman & Höke, 2020. Nat Rev Neurosci 21: 183-196). Specifically, this will involve maintenance and genetic manipulation of cell lines, microscopy, routine molecular biology methods (PCR, bacterial cloning) and the screening and characterisation of antibodies (ELISA, western blotting, immunocytochemistry). Research assistants are likely to have opportunities to attend conferences and publish their work and are always encouraged to contribute to group discussions about both their own research and that of their colleagues.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 July 2023 in the first instance.
