Location: Cambridge
Salary: £23,144 to £24,285 (there is a 10% reduction if pre-PhD submission)
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

Churchill College intends to appoint a William and Barbara Hawthorne and Sydney Harvey Junior Research Fellow in Engineering. This will normally be tenable for three years from 1 October 2023.

Offer

Churchill College includes a significant community of postdocs – around 60 in all, including Junior Research Fellows, Teaching By-Fellows and Postdoctoral By-Fellows. They are all full members of the Senior Common Room with generous dining rights, access to sports and music facilities, and varied opportunities for participation in the academic and social life of the College. The Junior Research Fellow will receive an initial salary in the range £23,144 - £24,285 (there is a 10% reduction if pre-PhD submission) and will additionally be entitled to a small Fellows’ set in College. Research expenses can also be claimed up to £1000 p.a. The position involves no formal teaching requirement, although it is hoped that appointees will participate in mentoring postgraduate students or contribute to the College’s academic mission in other ways.  Opportunities for undergraduate teaching may be available in some subjects. The prime duty of a Research Fellow is to pursue research and they will be expected to provide a written report on the progress of their research each year.

Criteria

Applicants must be UK or Commonwealth nationals. The Fellowship is open to graduates of any University with no age limit, but will normally be awarded to candidates who have recently completed their PhD or are close to completion. Appointments will be made on the basis of academic distinction and potential contribution to the academic community at Churchill College. The Fellowship is intended to be a first post-doctoral position, appropriate to the start of an academic career in Engineering, for someone who intends to pursue an independent research agenda free from departmental obligations or constraints. Candidates are advised that they are responsible for checking their eligibility to take up the post under UK immigration rules.

Applications

Churchill College, Fitzwilliam College, Murray Edwards College, Robinson College, St Edmund’s and Trinity Hall operate a Joint Application Scheme for Early Career Research Fellowships, with a total of eight Fellowships offered for 2023. Full information regarding all the Fellowships on offer, further particulars and registration details will be available at the Joint Application Scheme website from 7 October 2022.
