To lead our continuing growth as a global research and education institution, we are committed to expanding our professoriate across areas of research strength. If you have the ability, confidence, and determination to drive groundbreaking research in your area, this is your chance to join our world-leading team of Sport and Exercise Science researchers to build a research portfolio that matches your vision, and to achieve real-world impact.
With over 4,000 staff members and around 40,000 students – including some 6,000 choosing to study for a postgraduate qualification – we are a big institution with even bigger ambitions. We are proud to be an integral part of the great city of Manchester, but our impact reaches around the globe. Currently, we offer more than 250 postgraduate taught programmes and have 14 centres of research expertise.
We are committed to providing excellent education to transform our students’ lives, and to delivering high quality research with powerful real-world impacts and benefits, as evidenced by our highly successful REF outcome: 30% of our research, across more than 740 academics, has been rated as world leading. And 91% of our research impact is world leading or internationally excellent (REF 2021).
Now, we are making a significant investment in realising our objectives to excel in education and to build on our research reputation. Alongside our £400m campus and University infrastructure upgrade, we are investing in people: making Manchester Metropolitan the logical next step for talented, ambitious senior research academics at their peak
About the opportunity
You will play a lead role in our new Institute of Sport, a £30m strategic investment that champions everything that sport can do from work that is focused on building a healthier society to activities that inspire the next generation and push the limits of human performance. Our researchers include musculoskeletal scientists and health professionals and experts in sports policy from our triple-accredited Business School.
In REF 2021, we submitted 55 researchers into Sport and Exercise Science, and 94% of our submission was rated as world leading or internationally excellent, and we ranked sixth in the UK for the power of our research. Extensive partnerships with national bodies, NHS Trusts, local authorities, multinational brands, and international universities allow us to optimise the impact of collaborative and funded research. We work with academic teams across the globe in countries including Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, and the USA. We collaborate to provide opportunities for funded projects, exchanges, and joint PhD supervision. Meanwhile, we work with elite clubs and organisations, including Manchester City FC, UK Sport, Sport England and British Swimming, and we’re proud to have a large and diverse postgraduate community.
You will have the freedom to tailor your development and build your academic reputation. Alongside expanding on your own vision and expertise, you will play a key role in mentoring others, promoting a cooperative, intellectually curious research culture and, as a member of the leadership community, supporting our long-term research strategy to enrich students’ lives while having a positive effect on our world. You can count on our full support; from the financial backing you need to the collegiate atmosphere and extraordinary quality of life that Manchester Metropolitan can offer.
