University of Strathclyde - Faculty of Engineering

Location: Glasgow
Salary: Not Specified
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 21st November 2022
Closes: 11th December 2022
Job Ref: 372028

The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow (Times Higher Education Awards University of the Year 2019 and Scottish University of the Year 2020) possesses a large and internationally leading Engineering Faculty with a proud history of securing major funding for projects from government and other funding agencies and in operating successful joint ventures and partnerships with industrial organisations.

Built on an investment by the Scottish Government alongside a contribution from the University of Strathclyde and a revenue commitment from the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, NMIS will encompass a dedicated facility that will house the Manufacturing Skills Academy (MSA), Digital Factory 2050 and the Innovation Collaboratory. Along with this dedicated new facility, existing and developing research centres will also be part of the broader NMIS Group including the Advanced Forming Research Centre (AFRC) and the Lightweight Manufacturing Centre (LMC). With services and outreach activities designed to bring NMIS’ expertise direct to business, and close connections with Scotland’s enterprise and skills agencies, manufacturing businesses of all size and sub-sector right across Scotland can benefit while the skills academy will help employees and manufacturing leaders thrive in a changing manufacturing environment. NMIS’ focus on digital manufacturing, automation and skills will bring benefits across multiple sectors. Industrial manufacturing businesses in aerospace, engineering, automotive, renewables and shipbuilding will particularly benefit, but NMIS will also support businesses in sectors such as oil and gas, chemicals, life sciences and food and drink.

The Digital Factory is a state-of-the-art research facility and digital innovation enterprise. The technical capabilities within the Digital Factory were designed in direct response to the needs of industry, offering a fully connected digital manufacturing environment and helping organisations to experience and integrate the latest Industry 4.0 technology into their operations.

The Director will provide the vision, leadership and entrepreneurial drive to ensure the Digital Factory delivers transformational capabilities to Scottish Industry and work with the wider HVM Catapult network to deliver similar improvement across the UK. The individual will establish the processes and culture that deliver a well-informed and bold research strategy, an effective programme delivery structure, and efficient operational management activity.

The Director will be responsible ensuring the ongoing financial sustainability of the Centre through membership, grant funding, and commercial income by engaging with local and international industrial partners, funding agencies and prospective partners/client at the highest level. The Director will also be responsible for establishing a strong research and technology transfer network, bringing together and channelling expertise from the University of Strathclyde, the network of Scottish Universities, Catapult centres, Industrial Partners and the wider UK research community.

This role is a fantastic opportunity for a strong leader to significantly accelerate digital manufacturing innovation and industrial application across a wide range of manufacturing sectors, many of which are currently failing to change at a pace that will allow them to remain globally competitive, or even survive.

This high-profile role will require candidates who have the right blend of strategic vision, technical depth, operational rigour, people skills and business acumen to deliver programme commitments and achieve the impact expected from our government, academic and industrial stakeholders.
