PhD Studentship in Gut Microbiology

Project title:  Evaluating the effects of herbal tea upon gut microbial health

Department/School: FNS (SCFP)

Supervisor:  Glenn Gibson

Project Overview:

This research will use in vitro (laboratory models of the human gut) and in vivo (a human dietary intervention study) to investigate how herbal teas can affect the gut microbiota. We know that gut bacterial can be positive, negative or neutral for health with an ever expanding variety of conditions being investigated. Herbal teas are very popular in the UK and we already have evidence for the positive influences of certain herbs on gut microbes. This project will take this further by looking at teas containing herbs (e.g. mint, ginger, cinnamon) for their ability to stimulate health promoting gut microbes. Practical skills will include microbiology, nutrition, molecular biology, biochemistry and data analysis. The research student will join a team of around 20 researchers looking at various aspects of human gut health. We will also provide a variety of supplementary training courses including laboratory safety, time management, scientific writing, presentation skills.

This project is a funded 3 year PhD studentship, including registration fees, stipend, bench fee. The composition fee equates to registration costs for the student, stipend includes income whilst the bench fee laboratory and human trial costs with travel to conferences where the student would present his/her data.
