Closes: 24th February 2023

In line with the net-zero agenda, hydrogen (H2) is considered as a viable zero-carbon energy carrier for internal combustion engines (ICEs) used in medium/heavy-duty mobile applications with high machine mass, daily hours, and duty factor. The aim of this PhD project is to investigate and propose viable exhaust aftertreatment techniques for minimising nitrogen-based and green-house-gas emissions from the high-efficiency H2ICEs, towards ‘zero-harm’ solutions. The doctoral researcher will benefit from accessing state-of-the-art experimental laboratories and high-performance computing facilities during the PhD studies. The position will also offer opportunities to engage in teaching activities within the School of Engineering.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • A master’s degree in a relevant discipline (Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy, Chemistry, Physics, etc.); ideally 1st class or at least high 2.1 (or equivalent); bachelor’s degrees will be also considered in exceptional cases.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics.

Desirable:

Interest in:

  • Net-zero, renewable energy, carbon-free and low-carbon energy carriers, internal combustion engines, emission control technologies, exhaust aftertreatment systems;
  • Performing experimental studies, data analysis and interpretation of research findings;
  • Machine learning, artificial intelligence, and programming techniques;
  • and experience in disseminating research findings, e.g. authoring research articles.
