Wellcome Genome Campus
Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges.
About the Role:
We are looking for a Senior Bioinformatician to join Cellular Genetics Informatics in our Cellular Genetics Programme team for a permanent contract.
About Us:
CGI is a computational support team responsible for providing efficient access to cutting-edge analysis methods for Cellular Genetics faculty groups at the Sanger Institute. The Cellular Genetics department uses a combination of high throughput experimentation and computational tool development to understand the biology of cells, and leads a number of world-class research initiatives, including the Human Cell Atlas. CGI focus is the development and operation of scientific analysis workflows and tools for data analysis that support the department’s research goals, as well as developing the infrastructure necessary to manage the efficient operation of those workflows.
About the Role:
This role will focus on providing bioinformatic support for the core faculty groups and associated faculty of the Cellular Genetics programme (~10 groups in total). This will include establishing strong interactions with PhD students and Postdocs and helping them with general and bespoke data analysis. Typical datasets include a rich variety of spatial and single-cell transcriptomics, as well as many other novel types of sequencing and imaging data. Our supported users are a mix of computational and wet-lab researchers.
As part of the CGI team, you will have access to Sanger’s world-class computational resources, including an OpenStack private cloud environment, a 15000+ core computational cluster, and many petabytes of high-speed distributed file systems and object stores.
About You:
You will have excellent experience in high level scripting languages with the ability to analyse large complex datasets. You will work collaboratively with the Cellular Genetics faculty groups and understand their bioinformatics requirements to meet scientific aims. You will remain up to date with the latest bioinformatics tools to ensure that we provide the most effective standard and bespoke bioinformatics analysis.
Essential Skills:
Technical Skills:
Degree in a relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. Computational Biology, Genetics, Bioinformatics, Physics, Engineering or Mathematics)
Experience programming in high level scripting languages (R, Python)
Proven understanding and experience in the fields of bioinformatics, data processing, and high-throughput data analysis
Proficiency in Linux/Unix operating systems, including advanced shell scripting
Experience of planning and executing research projects and complex integrative analysis of large datasets
Behaviours and Competencies:
Excellent communication skills to allow efficient interactions with collaborators
Demonstrable good time management and project management skills
Experience communicating your research to the scientific community
Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships, particularly with scientists
Enthusiasm, commitment and attention to detail
Application Process:
Please apply with your CV and a Cover Letter outlining how you meet the criteria set out above.
