This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a joint institute between Lancaster University and Beijing Jiao Tong University (BJTU). The campus is located one hour south of Weihai in the eastern Shandong province, located in the ‘Weihai Nanhai New Area’ in the south of the Shandong peninsula.
The successful applicant will be based on the campus in China for two semesters, which are of 18 weeks duration. There will be a housing provision for accommodation in China, including all utilities, BUPA medical cover and two return flights included in the remuneration package. The accommodation is conveniently located near the teaching campus, with nearby supermarkets, bars and restaurants, and there is a beach and seaside area close by with a fish market.
The individual appointed will have the opportunity to teach on our English and Study Skills modules, which is part a four-year degree programme for Chinese students, leading to a dual award from both institutions. There are four modules, spread over two years. The crucial first year of the degree course prepares our Chinese students for entry into the second year of their chosen degree courses at the joint institute, where there are six pathways: Computing, Art & Design, Communications Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Accounting & Finance and Business Studies.
Main duties of this role are: to deliver student-centred classes incorporating opportunities for developing independent learning skills; to create supplementary relevant teaching materials, provide learner support; to evaluate learning through a range of assessment methods, and to keep up-to-date records as required by Lancaster University. It is hoped that all teaching will be face-to-face in China, for that reason we are particularly looking for candidates based in China. However, in these uncertain times delivery for the first semester could be on-line or a blended approach may be adopted.
Applicants should have TESOL/CELTA qualifications with recent experience of teaching English for Academic Purposes in a variety of international settings. Post graduate teaching qualifications (MA TESOL/ or DELTA) are highly desirable. Candidates will be expected to have tutorial experience, working in both large and small group settings.
Experience of teaching international students, ideally Chinese students, plus proficiency in the use of interactive technologies is essential. There is a very strong preference for candidates who are already in China and who can easily travel to the China campus to teach in-person. Successful candidates must be available to commence in the role by February 2023 and this role is subject to being able to obtain a Z visa (work visa) prior to the first deployment to china.
The modules to be covered are taught for up to 18 hours per week with additional tutorial hours.
