We are looking for an experienced, adaptable and highly motivated person to work with our Wood technical team at the Royal College of Art. This team supports a wide variety of programmes with woodworking activities across all campuses. We have a brand new Wood workshop in our Battersea South building that includes a wide variety of technical facilities and processes.

The day job as a Technical Instructor in Wood:

  • Provide technical support, advice and demonstrations in the specialist Wood workshops
  • Support the growth of bench based making areas that allow students to explore and develop work within the experimental stages of their research. 
  • Continual learning as part of a dynamic team.
  • Assist students and staff in problem solving and finding technical solutions.
  • Maintain specialist equipment and applicable health and safety accurate records. 
  • Support College Teaching, Learning, Research activity as appropriate for the role.

What you will need to have:

  • Significant, highly skilled, specialist knowledge of a variety of processes for working with wood.
  • Experience of delivering in person technical workshops.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
  • The ability to use initiative and work as part of a team.
  • Excellent organisational, time management, planning and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent user focus and a flexible approach.
  • Experience of creating online learning materials is essential.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety issues and Risk Assessment procedures
  • Some experience of working with the digital wood manufacturing would be desirable but not essential.

The Recruitment Process:

As part of your application, you may be invited to an initial assessment on Zoom, a technical test and formal interview. We plan to assess over zoom on the 11th January 2023 and panel interviews onsite will be on the 18th January 2023.
