Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships (ECFs) aim to provide career development opportunities for those who are at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, but who have a proven record of research. The Guildhall School is delighted to be able to invite candidates to participate in an internal process to select promising individuals and projects for support and development prior to submitting an application to the Leverhulme Trust.

The Guildhall School is distinctive in being the only world-leading European institution that is both a music conservatoire and a drama school; it is also pre-eminent in technical theatre, professional development, community outreach, and music therapy. In 2019, the Guildhall School won 50% of Leverhulme ECFs awarded to researchers in the field of Music nationally, and has been rated the top music conservatoire for research in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2021).

The research department at the Guildhall School explores fundamental questions about the creative arts. It embraces a wide range of disciplines within music and drama including composition, performance, pedagogy, historical musicology, music and literature studies, cultural history, electronic music, and music therapy. The School therefore invites project proposals that fit within the wide range of disciplines under the Guildhall School remit. Please see our website for more information.

The application process will be as follows:

  • Candidates should check their eligibility here.
  • Eligible candidates are invited to apply to the Guildhall School’s internal deadline of 12pm on 9th January 2023; applicants should send an email to research@gsmd.ac.uk, with:Name and current institutional affiliation
    • Name of a suitable Guildhall mentor (you do not need to have made a formal connection with a mentor)
    • A short CV (2 pages maximum);
    • An outline proposal (2 pages maximum).
    • (Applications received after the deadline will not be considered for shortlisting)
  • One or two candidates will be selected for support by the internal panel based on the below criteria:
    • Originality—the research achieves more than the incremental development of a single discipline
    • Importance—the work will enable further research or enquiry
    • Significance—the proposed research has relevance outside a single field, and is able to excite those working in other disciplines
    • Merit—the quality of the research design and methodology, and the suitability of the researchers and institution for the realisation of the proposed research objectives
  • Successful candidates will be supported with their application to the national competition run by the Leverhulme Trust
    • Final applications must be online by 20 February 2023 at 12pm.
    • Institutional approval takes place on 23 February 2023 at 4pm.
  • If successful, the Guildhall School will then host the award from the Leverhulme Trust and the expectation is that any successful applicant is likely to be offered an employment contract at the Guildhall School to carry out their proposed project. Appointments are dependent on the successful award of the Leverhulme Fellowship.
