Applications are invited for the Fairlie—Hutchinson Research Fellowship in French starting on 1 October 2023 and tenable for three years. The Research Fellowship will be awarded in the field of French studies, encompassing literary studies, thought and the history of ideas, cultural history, film and visual culture, and linguistics.
This fellowship is funded by a generous bequest from Girton alumna Dr Joyce Agnes Hutchinson, who read Modern & Medieval Languages at Girton and was a published translator, notably of works by the Cameroonian writer, Francis Bebey. The fellowship also commemorates the life of former Girton Fellow in French and renowned specialist of nineteenth-century French culture, Professor Alison Fairlie FBA.
The position is open to graduates of any university within or outside the United Kingdom. There is no age limit, but the fellowship is principally intended to support researchers at an early stage in their academic careers and will usually be awarded to a candidate who has recently completed a Ph.D. or is close to completion.
Candidates will be asked to provide a statement of research, which should be written in English and should not exceed 1,500 words, outlining their current research along with the research they propose to pursue if elected. Long-listed candidates will be invited to submit written work of no more than 12,000 words (not including footnotes etc.), accompanied by a short note explaining how this work fits into their overall research programme. Submitted work may be written in English or French.
Candidates must provide details for two referees who have agreed to submit a reference through the website by the application deadline. Candidates travelling overseas should note that, should they be invited to interview, the College cannot pay for international travel. We shall, however, cover the costs of travel within the UK and offer overnight accommodation at Girton. Overseas candidates may be interviewed online.
The emoluments of a Fellowship are reviewed annually. The present post-doctoral scale (from 1 August 2022) is £23,144 to £25,642. The post-holder may undertake, should they wish, up to four hours of supervision (or small group) teaching per week during the twenty weeks of the teaching year. Any such teaching would provide additional income. The emoluments are pensionable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme and are paid monthly in arrears by bank transfer. Research Fellows may claim research expenses up to a total of £2,500 over the three years of the Fellowship. Information on accommodation, if required, is available on request. Research Fellows are entitled to free commons (i.e meals) for the duration of the fellowship, except when the kitchens are closed. Research Fellows are members of the College’s Governing Body.
➢ The closing date for applications is 12 noon Monday 9 January 2023.
➢ Longlisted candidates will be invited to submit work by 26 January 2023
➢ Short-listed candidates will be contacted on 1 March 2023
➢ Interviews will take place on 13 March 2023.
