PhD: EPSRC DTP Studentship Micro-Mechanical Testing of Metals with Architected Microstructure

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Cambridge
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students, International Students
Funding amount: Fully funded
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 8th December 2022
Closes: 31st January 2023
Reference: NM34566

The goal of this project is to investigate the mechanical behaviour of metal alloys with architected microstructure produced using additive manufacturing (AM) technology. Beyond manufacturing of parts with complex geometry, AM is inspiring new designs of materials with spatially varying microstructure. These unique microstructures are attainable by tuning the AM process parameters site-specifically. Following this strategy, a single component may therefore be designed with complex geometry and multiple distinct microstructures, each chosen to best suit the constraints at a given point. A major application of this new paradigm is to produce materials with site-specific mechanical properties. The main challenge in this endeavour, however, is to understand how dissimilar microstructures interact with one another upon deformation. This knowledge is critical to identify the optimum microstructure architecture for a given application.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in  in Engineering or Materials Science and Metallurgy, and a keen interest in metal additive manufacturing.

They should also have a solid understanding of metallurgy (specifically solidification) as well as solid mechanics. Previous lab experience on metallographic preparation and materials characterization is desirable but not required.

EPSRC DTP studentships are fully-funded (fees and maintenance) for eligible UK students. EU and international students may be considered for a small number of awards at the UK rate. Further details about eligibility and funding can be found at:

To apply for this studentship, please send your two page CV and a motivation letter to Dr Matteo Seita (ms2932@cam.ac.uk) to arrive no later than 31st January 2023.

Please note that any offer of funding will be conditional on securing a place as a PhD student. Candidates will need to apply separately for admission through the University's Graduate Admissions application portal; this can be done before or after applying for this funding opportunity. The applicant portal can be accessed via: www.graduate.study.cam.ac.uk/courses/directory/egegpdpeg. Please indicate Dr Matteo Seita as the supervisor. The funding is conditional on submitting this application before 31 March 2023.
