This full-time post is available on the Streatham Campus immediately on a permanent basis.
Summary of the role
The University of Exeter wishes to recruit a Deputy BSU/ Laboratory Manager/Named Animal Welfare Care Officer (NAWCO) to work as a part of the University’s rodent Biological Services Units.
A critical member of the BSU team, you will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day management of the University’s rodent research facilities, both in terms of maintaining animal husbandry and supporting the operational needs of a multitude of research projects. You will, therefore, have experience working in a research environment with their input helping to contribute to high quality science outputs and be a competent technical manager; ensuring experimental work is conducted and the BSU and associated laboratories are managed in accordance with good laboratory practice. You will be able to form productive working relationships with other technical and professional services staff, stakeholders and suppliers in maintaining overall operations and culture of care within the facility.
You will be expected to have a working knowledge of rodent housing systems, BSU infrastructure and biosecurity. You will be a competent PIL operative and will use this to support research in the facilities. Knowledge of behavioural research with rodents would be an advantage.
Finally, you will hold the position of Named Animal Welfare Care Officer (NAWCO) and in so doing will assist in ensuring that the requirements of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 are met and that the highest standards of animal welfare, in accordance with Home Office licence conditions and University policy, are maintained at all times within the facilities.
