The Intelligent Vehicles Research Group at WMG is dedicated to the development of research and technology in connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV). We are currently seeking an ambitious Project Engineer to contribute to several exciting research projects including the flagship European Union's Horizon 2020 Hi-Drive Project. The successful applicant will develop software to support projects related to cooperative autonomy. This will involve developing and integrating software on autonomous vehicle platforms and infrastructure communications and sensing nodes (edge computing). With a particular emphasis on on-road trials and demonstrations to showcase novel research concepts.

To apply for this post, you will need:

  • A good honours degree (and ideally a post graduate qualification) in a relevant subject, for example computer science, computer vision, robotics, mathematics, systems engineering.
  • Experience of coding in at least one of the following languages Python, JAVA, C, C++, Matlab. A good working knowledge of middleware ROS would be of benefit.
  • Good practical experience in integrating software with hardware, preferably in a related domain such as automotive and robotics. Knowledge and or hands on experience of working with sensors, communications network architectures, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Robotics, Navigation Systems, Mobile Edge Computing, cloud computing would be advantageous.
  • Experience in experimental design, data analysis and data interpretation.
  • Have as a minimum, a basic knowledge of the relevant on-board vehicle sensors that may support vehicle autonomy e.g. camera, LiDAR, radar.
  • Possess effective communication (oral and written) skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Contribute to the technical delivery of projects. This will include but not be limited to the development and integration of software on vehicles and edge computing to support autonomous driving. Development of software for collecting, storing and processing data collected from trials.
  • Contribute to the design of systems and the procurement of software and hardware.
  • Support the design and running of trials on test tracks and public roads.
  • Contribute to the implementation of experiment designs and the gathering of data to support scientific publications.
  • Interact with current and prospective industry partners, to support the development of new research proposals.
