This project seeks to provide a structured and effective method for dynamically adapting mixed reality user interfaces to be most suitable for the current context of use. Context here is treated broadly and may refer to physical location context, task context, and user capability context. Such adaptations must be smooth and preserve awareness of interface elements to ensure productive and enjoyable interaction experiences. Contextual adaptation of interfaces is further complicated in multi-user settings where adaptations may need to consider the context of many users at the same time while delivering a common and consistent shared experience for all users. These requirements for contextual adaptation are unique to mixed reality use cases given the spatial and embodied nature of interactions.

The primary objectives of this project are to identify the requirements for contextually adaptive mixed reality user interfaces, develop the conceptual and technical architecture which can support this functionality, and build and validate the effectiveness of a proof-of-concept implementation. A secondary objective of the project will be the provision of design support tools allowing developers to embed such adaptation functionality into their applications.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in Engineering or Computer Science.

Strong software development skills, ideally with particular experience in development for AR/VR, are highly desirable. An awareness of Machine Learning and Computer Vision techniques would be advantageous.
