Project details

This group is multidisciplinary, bringing together expertise in management sciences and operational research, business analytics, operations management and decision making. The group is committed to improving management practice by designing and implementing analytic approaches that help tackle routine, strategic and policy problems. These approaches are typically supported by models that can often be represented mathematically or visually and built using specialist software.

Research priority areas

Within the Management Science and Operations academic group we are especially keen to receive PhD research proposals in the following areas:

  • improving management by implementing analytical approaches that help tackle routine, strategic or policy problems
  • developing analytical methodologies for tackling practical problems
  • contributing analytical insights and solutions to a range of problems within domains such as health, transport, logistics and supply chain management, process improvement, efficiency analysis of organisations, group decisions and emergency management.

Primary supervisor/CDT lead: Prof Victor Podinovski

Entry requirements

At least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent international qualification) with a preference for a UK master's degree (with average programme mark of no less than 65%) or international equivalent.

English language requirements

IELTS band 7.0 or above with not less than 7.0 in each component.

Funding

The studentship is for 3 years and provides a minimum tax free stipend of £17,668 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees.

Please note that studentships will be awarded on a competitive basis to applicants who have applied within the School. Funding decisions will not be confirmed until early 2023.

See studentship assessment criteria

For selected candidates the interview process is organised as follows:

  1. A first round of interviews with the nominated supervisor will take place between the 6th and 28th of February 2023.
  2. A second round of interviews with selected candidates will take place between the 6th and 24th of March 2023. The interview panel will include the Head of the relevant discipline group, the Director of the Doctoral Programme, and the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation.
