Energy storage is a crucial element in modern life. Energy generation, via for example solar cells, is becoming more common, and some house compatible battery components are available. These, however, rely on relatively expensive metal components. Recent research has shown that concrete can hold charge and act as a rechargeable battery. In addition, research at Loughborough has demonstrated the ability to 3D print concrete structures. We will now look to take this further and to print and embed the elements necessary to make a functional battery within the concrete. This would allow the structural elements of the building able to store energy for future use. The project will study the necessary elements required to improve the properties of the concrete battery, including better materials and improved fabrication. This interdisciplinary project will involve collaboration with a teams in Chemistry and Civil Engineering, and the student will gain experience in electrochemistry, materials and design.
Funding
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
The studentship is for 3 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £17,668 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK rate. While we welcome applications from international students, please be advised that the total value of the studentship will cover the international tuition fee only.
