The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has a strategy for reducing ship-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) by at least 50% by 2050. To respond to IMO’s strategy, renewable energy sources, Energy Saving Devices (ESDs), and performance monitoring systems have been proposed.
Most of the cases, ESDs are applied to new designs. However, new buildings cannot be counted as a sustainable solution since they demand raw materials from limited sources and big energy consumption during the manufacturing process. On the other hand, retrofitting technologies make ships sustainable, since there is no need to use a big amount of material and energy during modification. They also increase the fleet lifecycles. Thus, retrofitting clean maritime systems will be able to address the challenges in the maritime industry associated with GHG, and safe operations in a sustainable way.
Some challenges need to be overcome for the retrofitting technologies and assessing their performance and environmental impacts:
1. Integration into the existing system,
2. Analysing the big data
3. Reducing human error.
This PhD research offers to work on these challenges and fill the gap in the literature and marine industry by providing in-situ retrofitting applications. The collected data will be used to build a digital twin. Therefore, the proposal aims to demonstrate scalable clean maritime systems on a vessel to reach zero emission.

You must have, or expect to gain, a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject or subject relevant to the proposed PhD project (inc. marine technology, engineering etc.). Enthusiasm for research, the ability to think and work independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are also essential requirements.
Home and international applicants (inc. EU) are welcome to apply and if successful will receive a full studentship. Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills.
International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
