The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts independent research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL). 

In the department Biological Safety of the BfR is in the unit Viruses in Food from immediately permanent to fill the following position: 

Scientific Officer for Light and Electron Microscopy (F/M/X)

Part-time employment is possible. 

The post will be granted on condition that the client meets the general civil service law requirements and possesses all the appropriate qualifications. Alternatively, the position can also be filled with employees under collective wage agreements with remuneration up to pay group 14 TVöD.

Remuneration will be paid in line with the tasks undertaken and the applicant's qualifications. 

Tasks: 

  • Microscopic and electron microscopic diagnostics of pathogenic microorganisms
  • Electron microscopy (TEM, possibly also Cryo-EM, REM and EDX analyses) of biological materials and nanomaterials
  • Service, e.g. support of pathologic-anatomical, histological and material-chemical investigations
  • Scientific assistance in risk assessments of pathogenic microorganisms
  • Performance of tasks in relation to quality management in the laboratory
  • Acquisition of third-party funding and writing of scientific publications
  • Supervision of postgraduate students and trainees
  • Participation in national and international expert groups 

Requirements: 

  • Completed university degree (master, diploma or similar university degree) in human or veterinary medicine, biology or a similar subject, doctorate desired
  • Practical experience with electron microscopy required
  • Knowledge and professional experience in the field of pathology and microscopic diagnostics of pathogenic microorganisms required
  • Experiences with infectious agents necessary
  • Experiences in material chemistry would be an advantage
  • Knowledge in application and management of research projects and in acquisition of third-party funding would be an advantage
  • Documented publication activity required
  • Knowledge in laboratory accreditation desirable
  • Experience in national and international expert groups would be an advantage
  • Very good spoken and written knowledge of English and good knowledge of German is required
  • Good computer skills and a conscientious way of working, flexibility, teamwork and resilience are expected
