Senior Library Assistant

University of Cambridge - Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) Library

Location: Cambridge
Salary: £24,285 to £27,929 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 9th January 2023
Closes: 5th February 2023
Job Ref: VY34753

The Modern and Medieval Languages and Linguistics (MMLL) Library is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join our dedicated and professional Library team to deliver a high quality, inclusive and efficient Library service.

You will be responsible for the Spanish, Portuguese, Latin American and Catalan collections in the Library and you will liaise with the Spanish and Portuguese Section to provide extensive Library support for the courses run by the Faculty. Knowledge of Spanish is essential for this post, and you should be familiar with the cultures associated with the languages taught in the Section, including Latin American literature and culture.

As our new Spanish and Portuguese librarian, you will have a variety of responsibilities: you will create and maintain online reading lists using Leganto, our reading list system, and you will order, catalogue, classify, and promote the books and other materials on the reading lists. You will also train our readers on making the best use of the specialist resources available to them.

You will be expected to contribute to the smooth running of the Library service and will be keen to offer a great customer service experience, both in person and online. Reporting directly to the MMLL Librarian, you will be involved in supporting the undergraduate and MPhil community in the MMLL Faculty; we are especially keen to find someone who will be enthusiastic about helping us deliver our teaching and training sessions, and participate in outreach activities.

To be considered for this role, you must have sound knowledge of Spanish and have experience of working in a library or similar environment. Ideally, you will also have a working knowledge of Portuguese. You should demonstrate an adaptable and flexible approach to delivering library services/customer services. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Excellent IT skills are also essential for this post; full training will be given on our library management system, Alma.

Please specify in your application which languages you are familiar with and to which level.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates from a BME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in our institution.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 5th February 2023. We welcome informal enquiries about any aspect of the post, application process, or eligibility: please get in touch with Hélène Fernandes, the MMLL Librarian, on hk225@cam.ac.uk if you have any queries.

We strongly encourage those who are preparing applications to ensure that you consider and provide information about how your experience and skills match each of the essential criteria listed in the Further Information document.

Interviews for this position are expected to take place on Friday 17th and Friday 24th 2023.
