EPSRC DTP Studentship - Systematic Flow Manipulation in Wind-Turbine Arrays

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Cambridge
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students, International Students
Funding amount: Fully-funded (fees and maintenance)
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 10th January 2023
Closes: 28th February 2023
Reference: NM34924

The objective of wind turbine arrays design is ultimately to minimize the levelized cost of electricity over its lifespan. The objective of this project is:

(i) to derive a fundamental understanding of the fluid dynamical constraints on the scale of the array that limits its performance,

(ii) to translate this understanding into a technology that relaxes or modifies the fluid dynamical constraints,

(iii) to determine experimentally and rationalize theoretically the fundamental performance characteristics underlying any proposed technology,

(iv) to estimate the improvement to the levelized cost of electricity resulting from the proposed technology.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree in an Engineering or related subject. The ideal candidate should have a sound understanding of fluid dynamics, partial differential equations and topics surrounding renewable power.

EPSRC DTP studentships are fully-funded (fees and maintenance) for students eligible for Home Fees. Overseas students may be considered for a small number of awards at the Home Fees rate. Further details about eligibility and funding can be found at: https://www.postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/finance/fees https://www.cambridgetrust.org/scholarships/

Any preliminary inquiries can be sent to Shreyas Mandre (shreyas.mandre@warwick.ac.uk) with a CV, an expression of interest and any request for further details.
