The University of Liverpool is looking to appoint an academic leader with a strong research profile to lead the Department of Clinical Infection, Microbiology & Immunology (CIMI). The Department sits within the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences, one of four institutes within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. This is a fantastic opportunity to take leadership of an impressive department within a well-respected Institute and Faculty.
Through its clinical and non-clinical research, CIMI aims to better understand the response of humans to bacterial/viral infection, and translate this knowledge to improved treatment and prevention, particularly vaccines. The focus of research is in the UK and the global south. Staff in CIMI teach on a number of programmes, such as Medicine and Life Sciences at undergraduate level, and taught- and research- Masters degrees. The department’s state-of-the-art facilities sit mostly within the Ronald Ross Building, a purpose-built 5,000 m2 facility which includes containment level II and III facilities for in vitro and in vivo work. CIMI staff are also based in NHS partner trusts and the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome centre in Blantyre, Malawi. CIMI has strong links with Liverpool hospitals including the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Aintree and Alder Hey, which enables clinical research to be carried out with patients and in GCP standard laboratories.
The Head of Department will forge connections across the Institute, the Faculty and the University. The Head of Department will be instrumental in engendering an environment where staff feel they can work together on research, there is a team approach to the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and staff feel they are supported in development and progression.
As a member of the Institute Leadership Team, the Head of Department will also contribute to the running and strategic development of the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences.
The ideal candidate will have experience of academic leadership, ideally as a Head of Department or Deputy and experience of clinical research. Prior experience of the development and implementation of research and education strategies are essential parts of the role. The Department aims to increase its external engagement and, as such, someone who is able to implement strategies which maximise the Department’s engagement with funders and industry is desirable. It is also desirable for the successful candidate to have a personal interest in the delivery of teaching as well as being able to recognise and encourage its importance within the Department.
